Yoga Basics - Your Guide to the Practice of Yoga

Yoga has been around for thousands of years. Yoga is not just a form of exercise. For most people, this is a way of life that affects how they eat, reach for their goals in life, and treat others. If you aim to have a fitter body and a much healthier mind, doing yoga will be very much helpful. Here are some basic information that will help you in entering this new way of life.
1. What to wear - It is advisable to wear loose and stretch clothing when doing yoga. There is no uniform but is is required that your clothing does not restrict your movements. In most cases, you will be doing yoga barefoot. However, there are times when light shoes or even socks are allowed.
2. Equipment - The yoga mat will be the first thing that comes to mind but there are other props that you need to invest in. These are the strap or belt, chair with arm rests, blanket made of cotton or wool, and a wooden block. You can substitute a phone book for the latter. These are not heavy equipment one may find in gyms but they are essential in helping you follow proper yoga poses.
3. Poses - Typically, a class will start with warm-up exercises. They will then be followed by standing poses to open the hips and stretch the legs. After that, you will do sitting poses to feel calmer. When done with the sitting poses, your teacher will continue on to the twists. Following these are the supine poses, inverted and balance poses, and the backbends. The class will end with cooling down exercises.
The most important thing to remember when doing yoga is that you don't have to force yourself to hold a pose if it causes you pain. Yoga is not a sport. What you need to keep in mind is to learn the proper poses and not focus solely on stretching for as long as you can.
