Osprey Rucksacks Vs Gregory Rucksacks

by:Joy Summit      2020-10-14
When looking for a new rucksack, whether it be for hiking, climbing, trail running or any other adventure, two companies that should be considered are Osprey and Gregory. Osprey rucksacks feature great design and are well-known for durability. Gregory packs are known for great fit and comfort. The companies have a surprising number of similarities, but some differences as well. You want to choose a pack that not only fits well and is a good value, but a pack from a company that works ethically and supports great causes.
Both Osprey Packs and Gregory Mountain Products, as they are officially called, were founded by young men whose first pack was made for themselves. Mike Pfotenhauer of Osprey wanted a pack that fit properly so made his own. Wayne Gregory made his first pack for a Boy Scout project. Both companies grew out of a love for the outdoors and for comfortable, well-fitting packs. And today their products reflect these characteristics.
A company's values can be seen in the organizations it supports. Both Gregory and Osprey support great causes. Gregory supports only domestic organization related to outdoor sports and health, while Osprey supports both domestic and international organizations related to health, outdoor sports, and development. Some of the international organizations it supports are the East Meets West Foundation and The Himalayan Health Exchange.
Salt Lake City, UT is the chosen place for Gregory's headquarters, while Cortez, CO is where Osprey hangs its hat. Both locations are ideal for inspiring designers to create great packs, as well as for testers to test them. In addition to domestic offices, both companies have overseas production facilities. They approach them differently, at least in the way they are presented to the public. Osprey has a history on its website about how its production facilities were started in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam under the close supervision of the founder, who moved there with his family for several years. Gregory has very little on their site about their production facilities in China and the Philippines.
Both companies' choice of durable rip-stop nylon in different weights reflects their commitment to quality and long-lasting products. The look of their materials is very different, however. Gregory's material has a shine while Osprey's are matte. Both are nice, and it is personal preference as to which is more attractive.
The companies share major design elements, but the packs end up with a somewhat different overall look. Gregory packs look bulkier, though they are not overall. Osprey packs look cleaner, with less visible compression straps and add ons. This is due to the more monochromatic color scheme of most Osprey packs as compared to Gregory's color schemes.
Both companies manufacture rucksacks for traveling, for hiking (for men and women) and for multifunction use. Osprey also makes much more. They have a great line of kids backpacks as well as packs for travel trekking, mountain biking, climbing, commuting, and for use everyday. If you need it, they make it.
You can find any and every feature you could want between Gregory and Osprey rucksacks. They both make great ventilated suspension systems and have customizable and adjustable hip belts and harnesses. Osprey's torso adjustable harness moves up and down, while Gregory offers a harness that is attached to the frame via rotating points to automatically adjust to your shape. Gregory is the only company to offer a hip belt that can adjust to the angles of your hips, while Osprey offers heat molding so the hip belt is just your shape. A great feature of some Osprey packs is the ability to stow trekking poles without removing the pack.
Both Gregory and Osprey rucksacks have functional features and intuitive design. Make sure you know what feature you need because not all features are included on all packs. Both Osprey and Gregory are good companies with good values. However, overall, Osprey has a much larger range of packs specific to more activities. Look into an Osprey rucksack for good value and long-lasting durability.
